The Bismarck School Board has set September 18, 2012, as the date for a special election for a bond issue for new schools and equity improvements to existing schools. There will probably be three polling sites, but those have not been determined.
In August 2011, Bismarck Public Schools grew by 233 students. A demographer predicts 250 more students each year for five years based on Burleigh County birth rates and other factors.
The scope of the construction project is as follows: 1 new elementary school in Lincoln for 488 students. 1 new elementary school in NW Bismarck for 488 students. 1 new high school for 1,300 students (similar in enrollment to BHS and CHS). A plan for equity improvements at existing schools in the district.
The School Board has directed administration to work with principals on a more detailed improvement plan for existing schools in the district. The Board will also work with an architect and construction manager to determine sites for the new schools and develop building plans.
The amount of the bond issue is an estimate at this point. It could change as the architect and construction manager draw plans and secure bids. At present, the estimated cost of the bond is $86.5 million, which is $71.62 per year or $5.97 per month on $100,000 of property in Bismarck.
